Rules for Observers
INTRODUCTION
Observed trials challenge riders to navigate designated “Sections” marked with Start, Intermediate, and End gates. Scoring follows a “points-lost” system, beginning at zero and increasing with errors. The competitor with the lowest final score wins. Sections are arranged in a loop, with competitors riding each of the sections in order, starting at their allotted start section, i.e. if their start section is 5, they will ride 5, 6, 7, 8,9,10, 1,2,3, finishing at section 4. This helps to prevent long queues at the start and delays at the last section, enabling observers to help less agile observers put flags etc.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
-
All participants must be club members, signed in, and have paid the entry fee prior to the event.
-
Riders must fill out the entry form and select the appropriate riding class.
-
Machines must match the selected class and meet safety standards.
-
Riders under 18 must include their date of birth and have the form signed by a parent or guardian.
-
Identification cards (numbers or letters) will be issued and must be clearly displayed on the front of the bike.
-
A securely fastened crash helmet is mandatory; riders must be appropriately dressed (no shorts or inappropriate attire).
-
The Clerk of the Course may appoint a scrutineer to inspect bikes and gear. If requirements aren’t met, the rider must resolve the issue before competing.
SCORING SYSTEM
Scoring begins when the front axle crosses the Start gate and ends when it passes the End gate. Penalties are applied as follows:
Error Type Penalty Points
Clean (no errors) 0
One dab 1
Two dabs 2
Three or more dabs 3
Section failed 5
Section missed (Observer informed) 5
Section missed (Observer not informed) 10
📝 Only the highest single penalty per section is counted, except for up to three “dabs.”
Example: Two dabs followed by riding out of bounds = 5 points (not 7).
COURSE GUIDELINES
-
Sections must be ridden in order and only once per lap unless directed otherwise.
-
All laps start at the designated location given during the riders’ meeting.
-
Riders are responsible for completing all required laps and sections. Missed sections incur penalties.
EVENT CONDUCT & ADDITIONAL RULES
-
Unsportsmanlike behaviour may result in a 10-point penalty at the discretion of event officials.
-
Practicing in marked sections before or during the event results in disqualification.
-
Altering a section while inspecting (e.g., moving rocks) results in a 5-point penalty.
-
Leaving the bike to inspect a section forfeits the rider’s place in line.
-
Riders must request permission before entering a section; failure to do so can result in a 5-point penalty.
-
Spectators and other individuals must clear the section when a rider begins; failure to do so may result in penalties.
-
If a rider is significantly obstructed (e.g., by spectators, animals, or debris), they may request a re-ride. If approved, points lost before the obstruction stand, and additional points may be assessed from the second attempt.
